The world’s first glass was fused into useful objects by fire. These objects were admired (and used!) by the ancient Egyptians and Romans. But this early technique was soon passed by when glass-blowing was invented, because it was more efficient. Yet fusing creates some of the world’s most beautiful glass — handcrafted, formed by hand and heat, and always, full of texture and color. Fused glass has a character all its own, forged by fire and the artist’s vision. And this is why I love fusing glass today. I can use an ancient technique to create glass art that is genuinely useful—and beautiful.
